Cast Alloy

PWA 1480

PWA 1480 was the first single crystal alloy commercially produced by Pratt and Whitney, qualifying for high-pressure turbine blades in the JT9D-7R4 engine in 1982. Its high tantalum content improves oxidation resistance and stabilizes the gamma prime phase, while the absence of grain boundary strengthening elements supports a higher solvus temperature and superior creep capability. Qualified under PWA 1480, it is a baseline first-generation single crystal alloy for aerospace and military propulsion systems.
